Who ever pays attention to their garbage disposal? Probably no one, unless and until it starts acting up. Here are a few quick tips for keeping your disposal clean and healthy:
Run a strong flow of cold water through the disposal whenever it's in use, and then for at least 20 seconds after turning it off.
To freshen your disposal, periodically grind a half lemon or lime while running cold water.
Never put fibrous foods like celery, corn husks, potato or onion skins in the disposal.
Never use a liquid drain opener in a clogged disposal; use tongs, pliers or a plunger to remove obstructions.
Periodically run ice cubes through your disposal. This helps to sharpen and clean the blades.

Turn Valves On and Off
Turn main water supply and fixture valves on and off periodically to make sure they don't get stuck. You want to be sure you're never in the position of not being able to turn your water supply off during an emergency or home plumbing repair.
Repair Leaking Faucets
Leaking faucets are not only a nuisance, they can also cause gallons of water to be wasted over time. Leaking faucets with washer fittings can be fixed by replacing the washer. If you have a faucet that doesn't use a washer, check the faucet's manual or consult a specialist.
Inspect Pipes Annually
You should examine your distribution and drainage pipes for signs of leaks each year. You may find clues that your pipes are leaking along the length of the pipe or around fittings or fixtures. Signs of leaks may include rust, corrosion, and mineral deposits.
You'll also want to check the insulation of your hot water pipes each year before cold weather sets in. Replace any open or damaged areas of insulation.
