Amazing Video of Water Drop at 2000 Frames per Second

Despite water's very simple atomic structure, it exhibits some amazing properties.

"This structure consists of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. The nature of the atomic structure of water causes its molecules to have unique electrochemical properties. The hydrogen side of the water molecule has a slight positive charge. On the other side of the molecule a negative charge exists. This molecular polarity causes water to be a powerful solvent and is responsible for its strong surface tension."

For a somewhat less technical explanation and a very cool demonstration of some of water's almost amazing properties, check out this video...

Protect Yourself from Frozen Pipes

Each year around this time we post some information about protecting your plumbing in cold weather. Well, it seems this year's cold snap caught us all by surprise. For the last two days the guys have been running around fixing burst pipes all over Sonoma Valley. Even few of our customers in Napa got dinged by this week's weather.

Sorry for the delay - but here's our advice from the last couple of years - just a tad late.

Tip: Always do this before 8 p.m. the night a freeze is forecast. Otherwise Friedman's will be closed, and you'll be running around looking for MacGyver tape and old blankets. It will be cold and dark, and you will get annoyed with yourself. You might even kick the dog. And we can't have any of that.

So before you get all caught up in holiday hoopla, set aside time to assess the state of your outdoor pipes. Check existing insulation and replace any damaged or missing bits. Cover any pipes that haven't yet been insulated. Go ahead and put away your garden hoses for the winter and cover outdoor hose bibbs. There are inexpensive insulated foam covers available that just screw on over the faucet.

If you happen to have a valve that shuts off water to your outside faucets, you can easily shut down all of them at once. Then open the faucets outside to allow any water in the pipe to drip out.

Important
:
Don't forget your pool or hot tub. While you might very well leave the water in your pool or spa through the winter months, there may be plumbing leading to it that should be insulated. Check it out - just to be sure.

It's been COLD in Sonoma Valley for a few too many days now, and the weather services are predicting another sub-freezing night tonight. Given the prolonged cold snap, it's even more important that you guard your exposed pipes from these ice-inducing temperatures.

Here are a few steps to take to keep your pipes from freezing:

  • Keep a trickle of water running from the faucets.
  • Beam a heat lamp or small heater at exposed pipes.
  • Wrap uninsulated pipes with newspapers, heating wires, foam, or self-adhesive insulating tape.
  • Keep doors ajar between heated and unheated rooms.
What If Your Pipes Do Freeze?

A faucet that won't yield water is the first sign of frozen pipes. But even if pipes do freeze, you can thaw them before they burst if you act quickly.

If a pipe does freeze, shut off the water at the main shut-off valve and open the faucet nearest to the frozen pipe so it can drain as it thaws. Be sure to waterproof the area with containers and plastic drop clothes in case leaks occur. Then, use one of the following methods to gradually warm the frozen pipe. (Be sure to work from the faucet toward the iced-up area.)
  • Propane Torch with a flame-spreading-nozzle: The torch will quickly thaw a frozen pipe. Safety Tip - Shield flammable areas with a fireproof sheet, don't let the pipe get too hot to touch.
  • Hair Dryer: Used like the torch, a dryer will gently defrost the pipe.
  • Heating Pad: Wrap a length of pipe with a heating pad.
  • Heat Lamp: For pipes behind walls, floors, or ceilings, beam a heat lamp 8 or more inches from the surface.
  • Hot Water: If no other method is available, wrap the pipe (except plastic) in rags and pour boiling water on it.

When loosening frozen connections, instead of using a wrench to force nuts and couplings frozen in place, douse the connection with penetrating oil. Wait half an hour; then loosen with a wrench.

Some of this helpful info comes by way of the All About Home website. Check it out.

Mold, Mildew and Fungus, oh my

Photo: Urban entropy (on Flickr) by Kyknoord

Don't let this happen to your home.

We know you wouldn't really. We're simply emphasizing a point: Left to their own devices, molds, mildew and fungus can eat your home alive.

Molds, mildews and fungus can be found on damp surfaces like bathroom walls, window trims, and other places where water accumulates or condensation collects. They are common microorganisms, essential to the continuation of life on earth, but when allowed to gain a foothold in some invisible or rarely visited nook or cranny of your home, watch out. They will digest your floorboards, cabinets or framing like they were old rotten logs in the forest.

And in confined places - like inside your house - some can lead to infections, allergies, asthma, and other breathing problems. Oh my.

Not all of these organisms are potentially toxic - and some are easier to clean up than others. If you find mold in your home, it might be best to consult with someone who is qualified and experienced in taking care of water damage and eradicating mold and mildew. And certainly if you have flood damage or discover a longstanding problem, call in an expert.

There are many types of molds, mildews and whatnot (oh my). They can look like black stains, or specks of black, white, orange, green, or brown. Take a tour of your home. Check for the following signs and symptoms:
  • Leaks in your roof or plumbing. Any water that is trapped inside walls or under carpeting will cause molds to grow there. In not so obvious places, check to see if your walls or rugs have light stains or a strong musty smell.
  • Mold in your basement. Rain or moisture can penetrate your home’s concrete foundation and make the bottom of carpets or inside of finished walls moldy.
  • Dampness at the base of the walls.
  • Rust at the base of steel posts or heaters.
  • Stains, discoloration or decay on wood partitions, paneling, drywall and wood posts.
  • White powdery substance on the concrete.
  • Peeling floor tiles.
  • Mildewed carpeting.
Make any necessary repairs to stop leaks if you find them. If you find mold and decide to clean it up yourself, you must be thorough. These organisms can be quite persistent and will begin to grow again if given half a chance. Multiple cleanings might be necessary, or you might have to remove the affected material completely.

Common places where mold, mildew and fungi thrive include:
  • Paper covering of gypsum wall board
  • Wallpaper
  • Cellulose based ceiling tiles
  • Paper products
  • Carpets with natural fibers
  • Paper covering on insulated pipes
  • Insulation material
  • Wood and wood paneling
  • General organic debris
  • Paper covering on fiberglass insulation
There are a number of steps and precautions you can take to safeguard against mold and mildew ever getting a foothold.
  • Always keep your home as dry as possible.
  • Do not wait to make repairs on your roof and plumbing leaks.
  • Using a sump pump is the best device to keep water out of your basement.
  • Use a fan to circulate basement air.
  • Use a DEhumidifier (thanks anonymous reader) to remove excess moisture in the air.
  • Do not keep wet clothing or materials around the house, use a dryer or clothesline to dry them.
  • If your basement is damp, get a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air.
  • Never ignore the dangers and effects of mold. Call a reputable mold remediation company right away if you suspect a problem.

Got Questions about the Sonoma County Direct Install Program?

The Sonoma County Water Agency has recently expanded the Direct Install Program to include single-family homes. Woo hoo!!

That means if you are on municipal sewer and you have a toilet that uses more than 1.6 gallons per flush, you are eligible to have Boden Plumbing (or any other plumber participating in the program) install a new low flow toilet for you - at no charge. The County water agency pays the plumber directly for the toilet, seat, angle stop and the cost of installation. Good deal for you for sure. Plus, there is no limit on the number of toilets we can replace for you - they just all have to be clunkers.

It is important to mention that if there are any associated repairs necessary in changing out your toilet -- say we find a damaged floor, for instance -- you would be responsible for those additional costs. In our experience, these instances have been quite rare.

Also, we offer certain toilets under the Direct Install Program. If you decide you prefer something else, upgrade charges may apply. (We guarantee all the toilets we install, so don't worry that the toilets we're installing under the Direct Install Program are not up to our usual standards. It's just that you might choose something different.)

Our process is to schedule a site visit to determine your eligibility and to evaluate what type of toilet will work for you. Then we can schedule your new toilet install.

And your old toilet will be pushing up daisies - or petunias.

Water Saving Tips Galore

There are at least 101 ways to conserve water. Really, there are.

Here are 10 for starters:

#1
Monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you discover leaks.

#2
When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

#3
Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice-makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for significant water savings.

#4
Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.

#5
Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

#6
Choose shrubs and groundcovers instead of turf for hard-to-water areas such as steep slopes and isolated strips.

#7
Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps.

#8
Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost vegetable food waste instead and save gallons every time.

#9
Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.

#10
For cold drinks keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain.

The 10 tips listed above come courtesy of Water Use it Wisely. There are lots of great resources on their site - check it out.

Earthquake Awareness for California
October 15, 2009

One week from today, on October 15th at 10:15 a.m., Californians will practice for the next big earthquake.

The Great California Shakeout - as the planned event is being called - is expected to be the biggest earthquake drill ever. Are you ready for the next big earthquake?

Loma Prieta, California, Earthquake October 17, 1989. San Francisco. An automobile lies crushed under the third story of this apartment building in the Marina District. The ground levels are no longer visible because of structural failure and sinking due to liquefaction.

Twenty years ago this month, on October 17th, 1989, the Loma Prieta quake struck Northern California. (See: 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake on wikipedia.) All the attention sure to be paid to that special anniversary will help to underscore the message from the Shakeout: It's important to be prepared for earthquakes.

Check the Shakeout website for activities near you. You will also find resources, like earthquake drill manuals, that will help you plan and prepare for an earthquake emergency.

At Boden Plumbing we think it's a good move to have a gas shut-off valve installed at your home or business. One of the biggest dangers during and immediately after a quake comes from fire as a result of ruptured gas lines. You can read more about gas shut-off valves (sometimes referred to as earthquake valves) in our previous post Shaken But Not Stirred? And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to call us here at the office. (707 996 8683 or 866 NO DRIPS) We'd be happy to tell you more.

And remember the Shakeout on October 15, 2009. It is good to be prepared.
